Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest reported $15.4 billion of assets under management in its second-quarter 13F filing, and the flagship Ark Innovation ETF (ARKK) continues to lean hard into a handful of names. As of Oct. 19, Tesla, SpaceX and Advanced Micro Devices accounted for roughly 18 percent of the fund’s weight, with Tesla alone at 9.7 percent and SpaceX at 6.4 percent.

The concentration math

The 13F shows Ark’s total portfolio at $15.4 billion, but the concentration figure comes from ARKK’s own daily holdings disclosure dated Oct. 19. Tesla’s 9.7 percent stake makes it the single largest position. SpaceX, held through the ARK Space Exploration and Innovation ETF (ARKX) cross-holding and direct private shares, sits at 6.4 percent. AMD rounds out the trio at 1.75 percent. Together they represent 17.85 percent of ARKK assets, which the firm rounds to about 18 percent.

Performance context

Since its October 2014 inception, ARKK has returned an annualized 14.3 percent. That trails the S&P 500 once the fund’s 0.75 percent expense ratio is subtracted. Over the past five years the fund has posted a negative 4.06 percent annualized return, a stretch that includes the post-February 2021 drawdown from its all-time high. The numbers are net of fees and sourced from Ark’s published performance data.

The index alternative

Vanguard’s Information Technology ETF (VGT) holds 318 stocks and charges 0.09 percent. Its five-year annualized return is 20.9 percent. AMD appears in VGT’s top ten at 3.67 percent. Tesla and SpaceX are absent because the benchmark classifies them outside the information technology sector. The comparison is drawn from Vanguard’s fact sheet and index methodology, not from Ark.

What to watch

The 13F is a backward-looking snapshot filed 45 days after quarter end. ARKK’s daily holdings file updates faster but still lags intraday moves. Investors tracking the Musk concentration should watch for SpaceX tender offers or Tesla option activity that could shift the private-public mix. The next 13F, due in mid-November, will show whether Wood trimmed or added to the trio during the third quarter.
